The 2016 Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp
July 3-8, 2016
Case Western Reserve University – Cleveland, Ohio
Bobby Sanabria—Artistic Director/Artist-In-Residence
Camp week was packed with Latin Jazz—learning Latin American rhythms (in particular “la clave”) and the various styles in Latin jazz. – 8-hr days of classes and Bobby Sanabria clinics (including his Clave: The Key), rehearsals, field trips and evening activities such as the very popular Latin dance (including Sanabria mambo instruction) where all dressed to the nines for an evening of mambo at the Cleveland Music Settlement’s Bop Stop jazz club. Students also performed in combos for the club audience. Hard work and music built incredible rapport as it does each year…students formed their own performing groups and friendships for staying in touch during the school year until they meet up again next summer for another Latin Jazz big-band week. The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors (America’s official touring jazz big band) were special guests at the end of the week, joining Bobby Sanabria and Faculty in teaching and rehearsing the students and performing the Concert with them.
